London in the 1870s (37 images)
I love stumbling across collections of old photographs, and this series depicting the streets of London in 1876-1877 is really cool.
The photos were posted on the Flickr stream of the British Library of Political and Economic Science and give us a glimpse into what life was like in 1870s London. As far as I can tell, people took beards way more seriously back then, which, as a bearded man myself, I can respect. Also, in one of the pictures, it looks like a man is wearing some sort of platform shoe, which was kind of baffling.
My grandfather used to say that he couldn’t understand why people talked about the good old days, because he said he lived back then and they were worse than modern times. He was half-joking, half-serious, but as much as I enjoy looking at old pictures like these, I’m glad I’m just an observer.
