Civil War photos megapost (95 images)

Civil War photos megapost (95 images)

The second of today’s posts featuring old photos is a series containing 95 photos taken during the Civil War. The Civil War has become sort of an abstract event for me.  It’s one of those things that I’ve read about, learned about, researched, etc. – but it doesn’t quite seem real.  It’s too difficult to imagine a time when people in America owned other people, a time when a war was fought in my own...

The American West 150 years ago (34 images)

As I’ve mentioned previously, I love old photos.  For that reason, today I’m doing two posts featuring old historical photos of the United States, the first of which is a series of photos by 1800s photographer Timothy O’Sullivan.  (The second post features American Civil War photos) This series features photos of the American West in the 1860s and 70s.  It’s basically exactly how I pictured it in my head – vast,...

Below are some fantastic historical photos of New York City from the New York Historical Archives.  I don’t know what it is about old photographs, but they make me feel connected to the past somehow, as if it suddenly becomes real when I can see the faces and places. These are particularly cool photos, as many of them show the construction of bridges and buildings we’re so used to seeing nowadays.  For some reason I never think...

Vintage bottle caps (160 images)

I can’t explain it, but I’ve always liked playing with bottle caps.  I have a bad habit of putting them in my pocket while having a few beers and then inevitably jabbing my leg at some point in the night. Here are 160 vintage bottle caps for those who enjoy them as much as I do.  Also, I can’t believe anybody ever drank Tab.   [via...

Vintage cigarette pack designs (160 images)

If you’ve ever been to the home screen of this website, you may have noticed a quote from David Craib stating:  “Design should never say ‘look at me.’ Design should always say ‘look at this.'” For this reason, great design often goes unnoticed, which is both good and bad.  It’s good because it means it has served it’s purpose, but bad because we often don’t take time to appreciate the...
