Cold War era spy gadgets (18 images)

Generally speaking, I post things because I find them interesting or think they’re cool.  These Cold War spy gadgets, however, are on another level.  Back in the day, these were the weapons with which the most powerful governments in the world carried out an information-collecting war. Some of them are pretty impressive, as I usually think of spy gadgets to be a more modern phenomenon.  They were able to make the cameras and guns surprisingly small for that time, I can’t imagine what’s out there nowadays. These are great...

Ever wondered why old books smell funny? (1 video)

Okay, maybe funny probably isn’t the right word, but you know what I mean.  Also, just a heads up, the guy in this video is a little creepy. But all of that aside, I’d always wondered why old books smelled weird, but never really took the time to do any research.  It’s one of those things that you mean to do later, but always forget.  Well, this time I didn’t forget, and now I have yet another bit of knowledge to annoy people at house parties...

A cappella Star Wars theme song (1 video)

I love these multi-track a cappella songs floating around the internet, and this one might be the most impressive I’ve ever seen.  Basically, this gentleman sings each instrumental part of the song, then layers them together digitally. Granted, I’ve only seen a couple of the Star Wars films, but everyone knows this song.  It’s like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song – even if you didn’t watch the show, you probably still know it.  And who doesn’t like a good a cappella...

Supermoon photos from 2012 and 2011 (20 images)

If you didn’t know, this past weekend was the closest the Moon gets to the Earth all year, and it also happened to be a full moon.  This phenomenon is known as a Supermoon. I was pretty excited about it, and to be honest, was a little disappointed.  It wasn’t overly super from my vantage point, not like last year anyway.  But I mean, it’s the Moon, so it’s always going to be cool.  Below are some photos of the Supermoon from this year and last...

A reminder of how impressive Earth really is (1 video)

In an age where computer generated worlds are commonplace, it’s important to remember how cool the actual planet we live on really is.  From canyons to volcanoes to oceans – there’s plenty of impressive landscapes to see all around us, no computer graphics necessary. This video is longer than the 3-minute-maximum that I usually try to shoot for, but it’s worth it.  Even skimming through it will reinvigorate your sense of awe for the 3rd rock from the...

Blackberry’s amazing new camera feature (1 video)

It’s been a hectic couple of days, and I’m about to head out of town for my brother’s college graduation (congrats, Dylan!), so I only had time for one post today.  BUT, it’s pretty awesome. The video below is of a new camera feature Blackberry and RIM have developed that allows you to travel back in time a couple of seconds to grab images of a person who may have blinked during the photo.  It’s a great technology that hopefully isn’t too little, too late for Blackberry and RIM. I had a Blackberry and...

Songs illustrated as pictographs by Viktor Hertz (25 images)

These song-inspired pictographs were created by an amazing designer named Viktor Hertz.  Viktor did a series titled Honest Corporate Logos that became an internet sensation a few months ago, and this series is just as good. Leonardo Da Vinci said that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, and this is a concept that Viktor Hertz understands and has...

Samsara documentary trailer (1 video)

I just heard about this film today, and I’m still reeling from the sheer scope of the project.  Samsara (which means ‘to flow on’ and perpetually wander through states of existence) is a documentary film by Ron Fricke shot on 70mm film that was shot in 25 different countries over the course of 5 years.  Pause. Think about that for a second and try to wrap your head around it.  The film is a non-verbal documentary produced by Oscilloscope. There is so much more I want to say about how excited I am, but I’ll just say...

Surreal landscape photography (25 images)

I live in the Midwest, so I tend to take beautiful scenery and landscapes for granted, but photos like these make me do a double take and remember to enjoy the sites around me when I can.  Photos like these always give me the impression that they’re the first frame in a scene in a movie that is on pause, and any moment they may come to life. No luck in that regard with these, but they’re still quite amazing the way they...

These look like ink drawings, but they were created with nails (13 images)

That’s right, these works by artist Chen Chun-hao were created using nails – by way of nail gun – instead of ink.  The effect is almost a ghostly image, something that at first appears to be ink, but upon closer inspection lacks the crisp, clear lines indicative of ink drawings. It’s a great concept, and I’m always intrigued by works of art where everyday items sort of take on the role of pixels in a digital image to create a larger work of...
